Intro
Remember when stories when my brothers and I get together
- Tackling my brother through the garage wall
- Handmade clothes
- Grandad ate the bad eggs
- Apple Sandwiches
Bring joy. Bring clarity. Bring perspective. Bring greater idea of how far we’ve come. Bring out of places of despair
- REMEMBER YOUR FAITH STORY
- v5 Timothy’s faith story - From grandmother Lois to mother Eunice to Timothy
- “I know that same faith continues in you” - Whether you’re 1st generation or 10th generation, pay attention and find momentum in where God has come from.
- My faith background vs New Christian vs not-yet-a Christian
- Don’t forget where you’ve come from - check the trajectory - We can often get bogged down in how hard things are now and looking back can often give us momentum again
- REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE NOW!
- V6 Timothy - “This is why I remind you to fan into flame the spiritual gift God gave you...For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline”
- I think Timothy, being a young leader, got lost in the enormity of what he was facing - opponents, lack of traction, Paul may not return - Paul is reminding him of who he is, the training he received and encouraging him to be who he is!
- Remembering Canada
- It’s no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me, I am a child of God, I’m the head and not the tail, I am great because greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world, I am an overcomer, I’m a great friend, I’m a great preacher, I’m a great singer, I’m a great
- People will say stuff - But what God says will always last
- Isaiah 55:11 - 10 “The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. 11 It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
- Remember the person that God has made you NOW
- REMEMBER THE CALL
- And not just the call, but the fullness of it too - Not just the what but the why
- v8 Timothy - To tell others about God - Be ready for harsh retaliation too - but then encourages with the reason WHY!
- v9-11
- “And God chose me to…” What has God chosen you for? What has God called you to? Who has God called you to? Do you know? Have you forgotten?
- SHAPE
- God has not called you to be here for you - he has called you to be here for Him and for others
- Isaiah 43:18-19 - 14 This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “For your sakes I will send an army against Babylon, forcing the Babylonians[b] to flee in those ships they are so proud of. 15 I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator and King. 16 I am the Lord, who opened a way through the waters, making a dry path through the sea. 17 I called forth the mighty army of Egypt with all its chariots and horses. I drew them beneath the waves, and they drowned, their lives snuffed out like a smoldering candlewick. 18 “But forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do.19 For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.20 The wild animals in the fields will thank me, the jackals and owls, too, for giving them water in the desert. Yes, I will make rivers in the dry wasteland so my chosen people can be refreshed
- REMEMBER WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TAUGHT
- v13-14 Timothy - hold onto the things that Paul had taught him
- How the Jews hold the Word close
- Deuteronomy 11:18-21 - 18 “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 19 Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.
- The way to remember what you’ve been taught is to go back to it over and over and over again. Keep it in front of you
- Johnson Rod
- Not just Bible stuff - things you learn to serve better, leadership lessons, advice from your mentor
